In Connecticut, Waterbury is 33 miles southwest of Hartford and 77 miles northeast of New York City. The city of Waterbury, Connecticut, is the second-largest in New Haven County. Waterbury had a population of 114,403 in 2020, according to the US Census, ranking as the ninth-largest city in New England and the fifth-largest city in Connecticut.

Its nickname, “Brass City,” reflects the fact that Waterbury was the leading American center for brassware manufacturing (including castings and finishes) throughout the first half of the 20th century. It was also known for manufacturing watches and clocks.

It has an interstate (Yankee Expressway) and route 8 and a Metro-North railroad station with connections to Grand Central Terminal. As well as Post University, Waterbury is home to the regional campuses of the University of Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport, Western Connecticut State University, and Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Originally, the land was occupied by Algonquin bands. Originally, Waterbury was settled in the area now known as the Town Plot section in 1674. The area was previously known as “Matetacoke,” meaning “the interval lands.”

In 1673, the settlement’s name was Anglicized to “Mattatuck.” The town’s name was changed to Waterbury upon admission to the Connecticut Colony in 1686 because of numerous streams flowing from the hills surrounding the valley into the Naugatuck River.

At the time, it included parts or all of what are now the towns of Watertown, Plymouth, Wolcott, Prospect, Naugatuck, Thomaston, and Middlebury.

In the early 19th century, Waterbury became an early American industrial power when it began manufacturing brass, using water from the Mad River and the Naugatuck River to power the early factories. Immigrants worldwide labored in the new brass industry, leading to an influx of different nationalities.

Incorporated in 1853, Waterbury was renowned for the quality and durability of its products.

The city has a total area of 29 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau.
