Danbury lies in Fairfield County, Connecticut, approximately 50 miles northeast of New York City. The population of Danbury was 86,518 at the time of the 2020 census.

Danbury is 14 miles southwest of Southbury, 33 miles southwest of Naugatuck, and 45 miles northwest of New Haven.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Danbury was the center of the American hat industry, earning it the nickname “Hat City.” The city is named after Danbury in Essex, England, while the mineral danburite is named after the city.

Danbury is known for its many attractions, including Danbury Hospital, Western Connecticut State University, and Danbury Fair Mall. Danbury ranked second on USA Today’s list of best cities to live in the U.S. in November 2015.

Danbury was settled by eight families from Norwalk and Stamford, Connecticut, in 1685. Danbury was then known as Pahquioque by its namesake, the Algonquian-speaking Pahquioque Native Americans who occupied land along the Still River.

Samuel Benedict was one of the first settlers to settle in Danbury, along with his brother James Benedict, James Beebe, and Judah Gregory. The Paquioque called this area Paquiack (“open plain” or “cleared land”).

The settlers named their town Swampfield because of the wetlands. The general court named Danbury in October 1687. To define the new town’s boundaries, a committee was appointed by the general court. The town was surveyed in 1693, and a formal town patent was issued in 1702.

During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army relied heavily on Danbury as a military supply depot.

Danbury Fair was held for the first time in 1821. It became an annual event in 1869; the last edition was in 1981. It was cleared for the Danbury Fair Mall to open in the autumn of 1986.

Danbury’s central part became a borough in 1822. On April 19, 1889, the borough was reincorporated as the city of Danbury. The city and town merged on January 1, 1965.

A dam was constructed near the Housatonic River in New Milford in 1928 to create Candlewood Lake, the largest lake in Connecticut (which extends into Danbury at its southern tip).

According to the United States Census Bureau, Danbury, Connecticut, has a total area of 44.3 square miles. In the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains, just south of Candlewood Lake, the city stretches across low-lying land (it includes the southern part of the lake). The city developed along the Still River, which generally flows from west to east through the city before merging with the Housatonic River.

As of 2015, Danbury’s population is estimated to be 84,657. Approximately 80,893 people live in the city, and there are 29,046 households with an average of 2.73 people per household. 44.1% of the population spoke a language other than English at home.

Whites made up 68.2% of the city’s population, Hispanics 25.0%, African Americans 7.2%, Native Americans 0.40%, Asians 6.8%, Pacific Islanders less than 0.10%, and other races 7.6%. Several residents of Portuguese and Brazilian descent live in the city.
