In the United States, Houston is the fourth-most populous city and the most populous city in Texas.

Houston occupies 637.4 square miles, making it the ninth-largest city in the United States (including consolidated city counties). In terms of total area, it is the largest city in the United States that does not have a consolidated government with a county, borough, or parish. Located primarily in Harris County, areas of the city extend into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, bordering other important communities of Greater Houston such as Sugar Land and The Woodlands.

A land investor founded Houston on August 30, 1836, at the confluence of White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou (now known as Allen’s Landing). On June 5, 1837, the city was incorporated as a city. Sam Houston, who won Texas’s independence from Mexico during the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, gave the city its name.

Houston experienced rapid growth in the 20th century due to a convergence of economic factors, including a booming port and railroad industry, Galveston’s decline as Texas’ primary port after a devastating 1900 hurricane, the building of the Houston Ship Channel, and the Texas oil boom.

Houston’s healthcare industry has become a major industry. The Texas Medical Center employs 106,000 people and is the world’s largest medical complex.

Downtown, three new sports stadiums opened in the first decade of the 21st century. Minute Maid Park, the new baseball stadium for the Houston Astros, was built next to the old Union Station in downtown Houston in 2000.

After the Houston Oilers left the city in 1996, the Houston Texans were formed as an expansion team in 2002. In the same year, NRG Stadium was built. The Houston Rockets opened their home at the Toyota Center in 2003.

Three major public airports are operated by Houston Airport System, a division of the city government. A variety of domestic and international destinations are served by George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, which together served 55 million passengers in 2016.
