01 · Not a city

No boundary, no ZIP set, no published population. It is a name, not a place.

Custom websites and the search work behind them, for businesses whose market is a region rather than a municipality.

Silicon Valley is not a city. It has no municipal boundary, no ZIP code set of its own and no population the Census publishes, because it is a regional name rather than a legal geography. Santa Clara County, which carries most of it, had an estimated 1,914,391 residents in 2025 and a median owner-occupied home value of 1,490,600 dollars for 2020 to 2024.

That distinction is not pedantry. It changes what local search can and cannot do for you here, and it is the first thing a provider should tell you rather than the thing they quietly work around.

Web Leveling builds custom websites and runs the search work for South Bay businesses. Hand-coded, shipped as static files, handed over as accounts and code registered in your name. The work is remote and we have no office in the region, which we would rather say on the first screen than have you discover later.

02 · No pin to rank on

The top results are companies named after the region. We will not outrank a brand for its own name.

Google decides local results largely on relevance, distance and prominence, and it measures distance against a real location. Because Silicon Valley has no boundary, there is no pin for it in the way there is for San Jose or Sunnyvale. A regional term does not map onto the mechanism that produces the local pack.

There is a second complication we watched happen. Reading the live results for this term, the businesses at the top were companies literally named after the region, and a local listing appearing for the query belonged to a firm in Houston, Texas. The map was matching on the name rather than on any place, because there is no place to match against.

The consequence is practical. Chasing the regional term means competing with brands for their own names, on a query whose local mechanics are broken. The winnable ground is the municipalities underneath it: San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto. Those have boundaries, pins and searchers standing inside them.

A regional page still earns its place. It explains the cross-city market honestly, routes a reader to the right city, and speaks to buyers who genuinely think in regional terms because their own market is regional.

03 · Who is judging

Your buyer builds software for a living. They can tell exactly why a page is slow.

The South Bay's employment base runs heavily to information, professional and business services, and the region is tracked as an innovation economy on measures like venture funding and patents. Whatever else that means commercially, it means your website is being evaluated by people who build software for a living.

They notice a slow page, and many of them can tell you precisely why it is slow. They notice a site that arrives as an empty shell and fills in afterwards. They notice a form that fails silently, a layout that breaks at an unusual window size, and a page that scores badly on the same measurements they are held to at work.

None of that gets said out loud in a sales conversation. It lands earlier, as a quiet conclusion about whether your business is competent, and it is close to impossible to recover from afterwards.

The upside is that the fix is objective rather than aesthetic. Speed audited on a production build, real HTML served on arrival, accessibility measured against actual ratios. A technical buyer who checks will find the work holds up, which is a better outcome than one who never checks.

04 · What we build

Custom on Next.js, shipped static. Built to hold up under inspection.

The website comes first, because the search work has nothing to stand on without it. We build custom, hand-code it on Next.js and ship it as static files, which is the mechanical reason it survives being measured. Real HTML on every page, so an engine and a technical reader both see the whole thing on arrival rather than an empty shell waiting on scripts.

  • Custom web design Built to hold up under inspection by people who build for the web themselves. No page-builder weight on every visit, no theme recoloured from somebody else's demo company, and nothing that only looks fast in a screenshot.
  • Search engine optimization Aimed at the municipalities where local search actually works, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto, plus the non-local B2B terms that carry no geography at all.
  • Generative engine optimization Because a regional B2B buyer is unusually likely to ask an assistant rather than scroll a results page, and those engines quote sources that are fast, structured and factual.
  • Google Business Profile management Where you have a genuine municipal location to anchor to. Google says incomplete or inaccurate profile information can stop a business appearing for relevant local searches, and a region is not an address.
  • Content marketing The documentation-shaped writing this audience actually reads: specifics, numbers and method rather than adjectives and promises.
05 · Being found

If the map cannot help, the pages have to do more.

If the local pack is a weak instrument here, the alternatives matter more than they would elsewhere. Conventional organic ranking on non-geographic B2B terms carries much of the load, because a South Bay buyer searching for a capability often does not attach a place to it at all.

Prominence still applies and still comes from being described accurately and consistently everywhere your business appears, alongside a fast site that supports every claim made for it. What changes is that proximity signals do less work, so the substance of the pages does more.

Being quotable is the other half. A growing share of technical buyers ask an assistant who to use, and those engines quote sources that are structured and factual. That favours specifics over persuasion, which suits a market this literate anyway.

06 · Questions

Asked and answered, before the call.

Q1Can you get us ranking for Silicon Valley?+

Not usefully, and we would rather explain why than take the work. The region has no boundary, no ZIP set and no pin, so local ranking mechanics do not apply to it, and the top results are companies named after the region competing for their own brand names.

Q2So, what should we target instead?+

The municipalities where local search genuinely works, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, plus the non-geographic B2B terms your buyers actually use. Those two together cover far more real demand than the regional term does.

Q3Does site speed really change a buying decision here?+

More than in most markets, because a meaningful share of your audience builds software and can diagnose a slow page on sight. The judgement forms early and quietly, and it is about competence rather than aesthetics.

Q4We sell nationally, not locally. Is a regional page any use?+

As routing and context, yes. As a ranking strategy, no. If your buyers are national, the work belongs in non-geographic search and in being the source an assistant quotes, not in local packs.

Q5Will rebuilding lose the rankings we have?+

Not if it is handled properly, and it is verifiable before you agree. Every URL on the existing site is inventoried and mapped to its new home with redirects so earned authority carries across.

Q6Do you have an office in the South Bay?+

No, and we will not imply one. The work runs remotely. Google's own representation rules do not count a rented mailbox or an unstaffed desk as a location either, which is worth knowing given how many providers claim a presence here.

Remote, and plain about it. The ownership is the part that is not.

We are not in the South Bay and we are not going to suggest otherwise. The design, the build, the search work and the support all run at a distance, and plenty of our clients are people we have never stood in a room with. What is not remote is the ownership: the code, the content, the domain, the analytics and the accounts end up registered to your name, and if you ever leave, all of it goes with you and any competent developer can pick it up the same day. Tell us which cities you actually sell into and whether your buyers search with a place attached at all.
