Is AI search bringing you customers? A monthly check

Track AI search traffic with a monthly check you can run free: citations in ChatGPT and Gemini, visits in GA4, leads from the contact page, and paid work.

Someone told you that customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI features who to hire. Maybe you are paying for work to get your business mentioned there, or a proposal says you should. Then the monthly report arrives, full of citations, impressions and a visibility score, and you cannot find a single booked job in it. You want to track AI search traffic without learning a new tool, and you want a straight answer on whether any of it turns into customers. This post gives you a check you can run yourself on the same day each month, using free tools, in about an hour. It runs in four steps: are you mentioned, did anyone visit, did the visit become a lead, and did the lead pay. Each step has its own number, and you read them in that order.

Key Takeaways

Check four numbers, in order

Mentions, visits, leads and paid work are four separate counts. A report that shows only the first one has not answered your question.

Visits show up in two places

Assistant visits can appear in GA4 as referral traffic. Google AI Overview and AI Mode clicks are counted in Search Console.

Zero is not always zero

Visits from apps, redirects and privacy settings can land in direct traffic, so ask new customers how they found you as well.

Run the free check before paying for more

If you cannot connect a single lead to AI search after a few months of the routine, hold off on adding budget.

Start with the same questions every month

Your first number is whether the assistants name your business at all. Write down eight to ten questions a customer would type, such as your category, your service area and the problem you fix. Add a few that name your competitors. Keep the list the same each month so the results can be compared.

Ask each question in ChatGPT search, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. For each answer, record the date, the platform, whether your business was named, whether it was linked, whether the description was accurate and which web addresses were cited. A spreadsheet with one row per question and platform is enough. Copy down anything that is wrong about your business, because that goes on your fix list for the month.

Google works differently, and you can see it in your own account. Search Console's Performance report shows the pages that received impressions, and Google's Generative AI performance report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode where it is available to you. Google Business Profile performance shows calls, website clicks, messages, bookings and directions from your profile, as Google explains in its Business Profile performance help. If you want the longer version of getting named in the first place, how to get cited by ChatGPT covers it.

Look for visits in GA4 before you trust a visibility score

Your second number is visits. In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the primary dimension to Session source / medium. Google's help page on traffic source dimensions explains how these values are reported. Then type "referral" in the table search and look for entries such as `chatgpt.com`, `gemini.google.com`, `perplexity.ai` and `copilot.microsoft.com`.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links automatically include `utm_source=chatgpt.com`, which is described in its help article on ChatGPT search referrals. The others appear when the visitor's browser passes the referring site along. Write down the sessions for last month and the pages those visitors landed on.

Google counts a click on an external link in an AI Overview as a click in Search Console, and it counts impressions under its standard rules, as set out in its help page on search appearance and clicks. Treat AI Overview and AI Mode as a Search Console number rather than a GA4 referral line. Google also explains why traffic arrives with no source in its guide to the Traffic acquisition report, so a quiet month is not proof that nobody found you through an assistant.

Write the month's visits in one column so next month's can sit beside them.

Count the visits that did something

Your third number is leads. A visit only matters if the visitor contacts you, so mark the actions that count as key events in GA4: a submitted contact form, a tap on your phone number, a completed booking, a quote request or a purchase. Google's help on events and conversions covers the setup. Set it up once, and every month's check gets faster.

Then ask a narrower question: of last month's AI visits, how many reached a key event? In GA4 Explorations, filter to the AI sources you found and count the sessions that reached your contact page or triggered a lead event. Tracking contact form leads in Google Analytics walks through setting up the form event. And how ChatGPT referral traffic looks in analytics shows what a small count looks like when it arrives.

Small numbers are normal here. Three AI visits and one form submission is a result you can act on, because it tells you which page and which question that visitor came through. If your Gemini visits need tagging to separate them from other traffic, Gemini UTM tags in GA4 explains the tagging.

Ask people how they found you

Analytics misses some visits, so add a second record. Put a question on your contact form, "How did you hear about us?", with choices such as Google search, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, a referral from someone, and other. Ask the same of every new caller and write down the answer in a call log. Compare what people say with what GA4 shows, and note where they differ.

Your fourth number is paid work. In your invoices or customer list, mark each new customer whose first contact came through a lead you tracked, and add up what they paid. Treat the source as evidence that AI search contributed, because a customer may have seen your name in an assistant, searched for you on Google later and then called. You are looking for a pattern across months rather than a perfect credit for each sale.

A citation is not a customer

A mention in an assistant's answer is not a visit, a visit is not a lead, and a lead is not revenue. An assistant can name you without sending a click. Each step loses some people, which is why the four numbers belong side by side. A report that stops at visibility can look strong while your phone stays quiet, and a visibility score sold by a vendor is not an outcome you can bank.

When you read any vendor report, ask which of the four numbers it measures. Ask where the visit data came from and which key events it counted. Ask for the lead and customer count from AI search for the same month, taken from your own accounts. If a vendor can show your GA4 and Search Console numbers next to its own, you can verify them in about ten minutes.

Run the free check for three months before you add budget

The cheapest answer to "is AI search paying off" is the routine above, and it costs you an hour a month. After three months you will have three rows of mentions, visits, leads and paid work, and you can see the direction. If mentions are rising and visits are not, the problem is probably your pages. If visits are rising and leads are not, look at your contact path. If leads arrive and customers do not, look at how fast you answer them.

If you cannot tie a single lead to AI search after that time, paying for more AI search work is hard to justify yet. Put the money into the things that produce measurable leads today, such as your Business Profile, your contact path and your main service pages, and keep running the check. Revisit the question when the monthly rows show something to build on.

What a monthly SEO report should show is a useful companion for judging whatever report you already receive. And what to do when your business disappears from a Google AI Overview covers the case where the mention drops out.

Can you tell if AI search is bringing customers?

Pick an answer to begin.

1. Which of these is a visit rather than a mention?

2. Where do Google AI Overview and AI Mode clicks show up?

3. Your GA4 shows no AI visits this month. What is the best next step?

Frequently Asked Questions About track ai search traffic

How do I track AI search traffic in GA4?

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, set the primary dimension to Session source / medium and search the table for referrals such as chatgpt.com or gemini.google.com. Then count how many of those sessions reached a key event.

Does ChatGPT traffic show up in Google Analytics?

It can. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com, so those visits can appear with that source. Visits from apps or with the referrer removed can land in direct traffic.

Where do I see clicks from AI Overviews?

In Search Console. Google counts a click on an external link in an AI Overview as a click, and its Generative AI performance report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode where available.

How do I know whether ChatGPT or Gemini recommends my business?

Ask each assistant the same set of customer questions every month and record whether your business is named, linked and described correctly. Save the date and the web addresses it cites.

Why does AI traffic show up as direct?

Google says direct traffic can include visits where the referral information was lost. Apps, redirects and privacy controls can all remove the source, so pair GA4 with a "how did you hear about us" question.

Is it worth paying for AI search work?

It is worth paying for when you can tie leads or customers to it. Run the monthly check first, and add budget when the rows show mentions, visits and leads moving together.

What This Means for You

Four numbers answer the question: mentions, visits, leads and paid work. GA4 and Search Console give you the visits, your contact form and call log give you the leads, and your invoices give you the revenue. Run them in that order on the same day each month, and you will see within a quarter whether AI search is sending anyone who pays.

The check also gives you something to hold a report against. If a report shows citations or a score and nothing after it, ask for the next number. If your own rows show leads from AI search, you have a reason to invest more, and you will know which pages and questions are working.

If you want help setting up the tracking or reading the results, Web Leveling can build the key events, the source question and the monthly check with you.
