Spread your ChatGPT citation sources across sites you control

Check which sites ChatGPT cites for your business, then spread those chatgpt citation sources across your website, profiles and earned mentions today.

You ask ChatGPT about your service in your town, and your business comes up. Then you click the source behind the mention and find one Reddit thread, one directory listing or one review page doing all the work. That is a thin spot, because a deleted thread, a changed listing or a platform tweak could take the mention with it. The fix is to know exactly where your ChatGPT citation sources sit and to build a spread of them, starting with the ones you control. The check takes about ten minutes, and the routine after it fits into a few hours a month. You do not need special markup or a paid tool to begin. You need a notebook, three assistants and a plain list of every site they point to.

Key Takeaways

List every cited source

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same service-and-town question, save each answer and sort every linked site into owned, listing, review, forum, trade or media.

Build from your own pages out

BrightLocal's 2026 study found business websites made up 42% of the citations it analyzed, so your website and Business Profile come before any directory or earned mention.

Repeat the check every month

BrightLocal measured only 20% overlap between ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, so one assistant's answer is a dated snapshot, not your standing.

Ask three assistants the same question and list every source they cite

Pick one service, one town and one kind of customer. Then run the same two questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, in that order:

  1. "Which businesses provide [your service] in [your town]?"
  2. "What sources support those recommendations?"

Copy each answer into a notebook or a spreadsheet with the date, the assistant and the exact wording you typed. Under each answer, write down every site the assistant links, even when it is a site you have never heard of. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search responses may include citations and that you should open the sources, because results can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, as its ChatGPT Search help page explains. Opening each link also tells you whether the page says what you expect about your business.

If your business does not appear in any answer, the list is still useful. It shows which sites the assistants lean on for your trade and town, and those are the places to be accurate and present.

Sort each source by who controls it

Once the list exists, put every site into a group. The grouping tells you at a glance whether one outside site carries your visibility, and it tells you which job comes next.

Count how many cited sources fall in the first two rows. If almost every answer sends the reader to one outside site, your footprint is concentrated. If your own website never appears, check that it can be crawled and indexed before anything else. OpenAI says a site must allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl it to be eligible for ChatGPT Search, and Google says pages need to be crawlable and indexed to be eligible for its AI features, as its AI optimization guide lays out.

Fix your website and Business Profile first

Your own pages are the one source nobody else can edit or remove. BrightLocal's 2026 Local AI Visibility Study analyzed 1,967,762 citations from 116,000 domains across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT. In its data, business websites made up 93% of the unique source domains and 42% of all citations, and Google Business Profile accounted for 28.5% of citations across the three platforms, with much heavier use in Google's products than in ChatGPT. The full numbers are in the BrightLocal study.

So, give the website a job for each question a customer asks. A service page states what you do, where you work, what a visit or project involves and how to reach you. A location page names the towns you serve with details only someone who works there would know. Add your hours, credentials and the questions customers ask before they call. Google says unique, useful, people-first content and ordinary SEO fundamentals remain the foundation for its AI features, and that no special schema.org markup is required. It also says an `llms.txt` file does not help Google Search visibility.

Then open your Business Profile and match it to the website: the same business name, address or service area, phone number, categories, services and hours. The local SEO citations post covers how listings feed this owned layer.

Every profile should tell the same story about your business.

Match your facts across the directories and review sites that repeat in your list

Directories are the second layer. Routeless collected 5,045 citations from 540 answers across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on July 26, 2026, and reports that directories supplied 20.6% of them, with the share varying by trade and city. BrightLocal lists Yelp, Facebook, MapQuest, Better Business Bureau and Angi among the listing sources that appeared. You can read Routeless's figures on its research page.

Do not chase every directory. Take the ones that showed up in your own notebook, plus the ones your trade is known for, and do three things on each. Claim the listing. Make the name, address, phone, categories, services, service area and hours match your website. Fill in the description, photos and booking link wherever the platform allows it. A single location is a small job; several locations is a medium one, because each profile needs the same care.

Review sites need a different habit. Reply to reviews, correct factual errors politely, and ask real customers to describe the work. The which review sites matter post helps you choose the two or three worth the effort for your trade. Never buy or write reviews yourself; Google says inauthentic mentions are not helpful and its systems work to block spam.

Earn mentions from other places that know your work

Earned mentions take the longest, and they only count when they are real. Think about who has a reason to name you: a customer who writes about the work, a trade association that lists its members, a local newspaper or community site that covers your area, a supplier or partner whose page links to yours. Each one is a different kind of source.

Offer something worth citing. A short case study with the customer's permission, a local cost or timing guide written from your own jobs, a talk to a trade group, or a sponsored event page all give an editor a reason to name you. Trade associations and local news are places to earn mentions, not guaranteed citation sources, so treat each one as a bonus on top of the first three layers.

If you publish best-of lists or comparison pages on your own site, keep them fair and sourced. The self-ranking lists post explains how to do that without losing the reader's trust.

The reported drop in Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations, as of October 6, 2026

The reported drop comes from Promptwatch, a company that tracks citations, in its article "Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit?", published August 20, 2026 and updated September 8. Promptwatch says it monitored ChatGPT responses that contained at least one citation. By its measure, Reddit averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, 2026, and 0.52% from August 14 through August 17, a relative decline of 86.4%. Promptwatch calls the size provisional and says the data shows timing, not cause.

Read that as Promptwatch's measurement of one slice of ChatGPT Search citations in two August windows. Citation share, traffic, retrieval and customer recommendations are separate things, and a forum thread can still help a customer who finds it. Promptwatch also reports much smaller declines in Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.

For your own business, the useful part is simple. A source that carries your visibility today can carry less of it after a change you did not make and cannot predict. That is the reason to hold more than one source, and it applies to a directory or a review site as much as to a forum.

Each assistant draws on different sources, so repeat the check

BrightLocal found only 20% overlap between ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews in the businesses they named, and 19% between ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. Routeless found that ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity shared no business on 106 of 179 comparable questions. So, a good answer in one assistant does not carry over to the others, and a single flattering screenshot is a dated observation.

Set a monthly reminder. Run the same two questions, add the date to your notebook and compare the source list with last month's. Note any new site, any site that disappeared and any answer that gets a fact about your business wrong. If one outside site now supplies most of your mentions, spend the next month on the weakest of the first three layers. If you also want to know whether those assistants send visitors, the AI search customers post shows what to measure, and how to get cited by ChatGPT goes deeper on earning the citation itself. Is your AI visibility spread across sources?

Pick an answer to begin.

1. You find that every ChatGPT mention of your business links to one Reddit thread. What do you do first?

2. What does Promptwatch's 86.4% figure measure?

3. Does Google require special markup or an llms.txt file for its generative AI search features?

Frequently Asked Questions About chatgpt citation sources

Where does ChatGPT get its citations for a local business?

OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses multiple factors to find relevant results and that placement is not guaranteed. In BrightLocal's study of citations across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, business websites and Google Business Profile were the largest source types, and directories such as Yelp and Angi also appeared.

Did Reddit lose 86% of its AI visibility?

Promptwatch measured an 86.4% relative fall in Reddit's share of the ChatGPT Search citations it tracked, from 3.83% to 0.52% between two August 2026 windows. That is its measurement of citation share, not of Reddit's traffic or of every AI system.

Can one Reddit thread keep my business visible in AI answers?

It can contribute, but a single thread is a narrow base. Keep your website, Business Profile and the listings that repeat in your notebook accurate too.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file?

Google says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI Search and that llms.txt does not help Google Search visibility. A clear, crawlable website with accurate details is the starting point.

How often should I check ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity?

Monthly is a workable rhythm; weekly only if you are making changes you want to track. Save each answer with its date, because results vary by assistant and by location.

Can an agency guarantee citations in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No. OpenAI and Google both say placement is not guaranteed. What an agency can offer is an inventory of your sources, fixes to your website and profiles, outreach for real mentions and monthly reporting.

Moving Forward

Your AI visibility is sturdier when it rests on several sources: your own website, a complete Business Profile, matching directory and review listings, and a few real mentions from trade groups, local media and customers. List the sources behind your ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, sort them by who controls them, and strengthen the layers in that order.

Repeat the check each month and keep the notes. A reported drop in one site's share of ChatGPT citations is a reason to look at your own spread, not a reason to panic. The owned layer is the one you can improve this afternoon.

If you would rather hand the inventory and the fixes to someone, Web Leveling offers generative engine optimization that starts with the same source list and works outward from your own pages. We work with small and medium businesses across the country and overseas. Contact us about your AI visibility and tell us which sites your assistants cite today.
