Your ChatGPT ad dashboard shows impressions, clicks and spend. What it does not show on its own is whether anyone became a customer. If you want to track ChatGPT ads conversions, the answer starts with one campaign and one outcome you can count, such as a form, a booked job or a sale.
You can run that check tonight with three things you already have: Ads Manager, Google Analytics and wherever you keep your leads. It does not take new software. It takes the same date range in all three places and a few minutes.
The harder part is making the numbers agree. OpenAI and Google Analytics will report different totals, and a phone call can slip through both. Knowing why saves you from cutting a campaign that works or feeding one that does not.
Key Takeaways
Pull spend, clicks, tagged visits, completed actions and real customers for the same dates, then divide spend by qualified leads.
OpenAI says static tracking parameters persist on ad clicks, so a UTM tag lets Google Analytics show which visits came from your ad.
Ads Manager counts conversions inside the attribution window you pick, using last-touch credit, so it will not match Google Analytics or your CRM.
Check one campaign tonight and find out whether it brought customers
Do this in order, using the dates the campaign ran and one time zone throughout. Write each number on one sheet of paper or one spreadsheet row. By the end you will have a chain from money spent to money earned.
- Ads Manager: Open the campaign and record spend, clicks and conversions. OpenAI's measurement page lists impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions as what Ads Manager reports.
- Google Analytics: Go to Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Filter for the source, medium or campaign name in your ad tags. Record sessions and key events.
- Your own records: Count the leads, bookings or sales from the same dates that came from the ad, whether your CRM, calendar, shop orders or call log says so.
- Qualified only: Remove spam, wrong numbers and existing customers from the count.
- Divide: Spend divided by qualified leads is your cost per lead. Spend divided by closed sales is your cost per customer.
Those five numbers answer the question. If clicks are high and the qualified count is zero, the next step is finding where the chain breaks, and the sections below show how.

Tag your ad links so Google Analytics can see the visit
Without a tag, a click from your ad can show up in Google Analytics as a visit with no clear source. Google explains that direct and none traffic is what it reports when it cannot tell where a visit came from. A tag fixes that for the visits you pay for.
OpenAI says static tracking parameters persist on ad clicks and can be read by your existing analytics tools, as described on its ads basics page. Add them to the destination link of each ad, using the same spelling every time:
`utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=paid_ai&utm_campaign=spring_offer&utm_content=ad_1`
Google's guide to custom campaign URLs explains how those four values show up in your reports. Keep the names short and lowercase, and write down what each campaign name means.
Never put a name, an email address or a phone number inside a tag. Google's data safeguarding page says not to send personally identifiable information to Analytics, and a URL is the easiest place to leak it.

Get a conversion count in Ads Manager that means something
Ads Manager only counts a conversion when it is set up to. OpenAI's conversion measurement page says conversion measurement uses the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API, or both. A conversion has to match the event your campaign is configured for, happen inside the attribution window you chose, and connect to an eligible ad interaction.
Installing the pixel alone does not make it count a form, a booking or a sale. Your site has to send the completed action, on the thank-you step, with the same event name the campaign expects. OpenAI's developer guide shows how the pixel and the Conversions API send those events.
| Where you look | What it can tell you | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Ads Manager | Spend, clicks, average CPC, average CPM and conversions inside your attribution window | Whether a conversion became a paying customer |
| Google Analytics | Tagged visits and the completed actions your site sends | Whether an untagged phone call came from your ad |
| Your CRM or calendar | Which leads were qualified, booked or closed, and for how much | Which ad produced a lead, unless you save the source with it |
OpenAI lets you pick 7, 14 or 30 days for click-through attribution, plus 0 or 1 day for view-through. It describes the system as last-touch, not multi-touch. Conversions can take 24 to 48 hours to appear, so check back before you judge a new campaign.
Know why OpenAI and Google Analytics will not match
Do not expect the two totals to agree. OpenAI's pages name several reasons they differ: separate attribution windows, different timestamps and time zones, consent settings, deduplication, and how each system defines the event. A person who clicks Tuesday and buys Friday can land on a different day in each report.
The check that matters is smaller than the totals. For each lead your CRM says came from the ad, see whether Google Analytics shows a tagged visit and whether Ads Manager shows a conversion. Gaps point to a specific fix.
Two traffic types often get mixed up. A visit from a ChatGPT answer that people simply clicked is organic referral, while a click on your paid ad carries your tags. Our post on ChatGPT referral traffic in Analytics shows how to see the organic side, and the Gemini tag check uses the same Traffic acquisition report.
Count calls and bookings, not only forms
A form is the easy case. Google lists `generate_lead` among its recommended events, and its guide to reporting on a lead generation form shows where those leads appear. Mark the event as a key event, then test it yourself with a real submission.
Phone calls need more. Track the click on your phone number as an event, then match calls against a call-tracking number, your CRM or a simple log. Google Analytics alone cannot prove that a call you got with no tag came from an ad.
The low-tech version works. Ask every new caller how they found you, write the answer in a log with the date, and mark each call as new, existing or spam. Compare that log with the dates of your ad clicks.
Bookings and sales need the same treatment. Send a completed-booking or purchase event from the confirmation page, and save the source, medium and campaign values with the record in your CRM or booking tool.

Fix the gap that hides your customers
When the numbers do not line up, the break is usually in one of a few places. Work down this list, since the first fixes are the smallest jobs. OpenAI's troubleshooting page covers the pixel side in detail.
- No outcome defined: Choose one primary action and write down what triggers it. This is a small job.
- Missing or inconsistent tags: Make one naming sheet and update the ad links. This is a small job.
- Pixel loads but the action never fires: Add the completed event to the thank-you or confirmation step. Small to medium.
- Event name mismatch: Make the name your site sends match the event your campaign expects. Small.
- Form or booking tool on another domain: Set up cross-domain measurement and test the whole path. Medium.
- Pixel and Conversions API both firing: Use the same event ID for the same conversion so it counts once. Small to medium.
- Consent or blocking: OpenAI says to send conversion data only where permitted and with clear notice and consent where required. Check your consent tool and tag loading. Medium.
- Leads not linked to the ad: Save source, medium and campaign with each lead in your CRM. Medium.
What OpenAI announced on October 5 and what it means for you
On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced new measurement partners and a visual ad format. The first check above does not depend on any of it.
OpenAI's announcement groups the partners by job. For data and conversion connections it names Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp. For incrementality experiments it names Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. It also lists attribution partners such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Northbeam and Kochava, and two brand suitability partners. You do not need any of them to read a single campaign.
OpenAI also said it would begin testing visual ads during image generation in ChatGPT for Free and Go users. The test was scheduled for later in October in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI said the ads would be labeled and separate from the image being made. The announcement does not describe the format as open to every advertiser, plan or country.
Cost works the same way. Ads Manager reports your own average CPC and average CPM, and OpenAI says it has no cross-industry performance benchmarks yet. So, your cost per qualified lead is the only number that settles the question. Our post on whether to try ChatGPT ads covers who can buy them and what a test costs.

Decide whether to keep spending without guessing
Are ChatGPT ads worth it? Measure first, then decide. Take your cost per qualified lead or per closed sale and compare it with what a new customer is worth to you after your costs. If it is lower and the leads are real, the campaign is earning its place. If it is higher, change the offer, the landing page or the tracking before you add budget.
Give a campaign enough time for your buying cycle. A purchase that takes two weeks to decide cannot be judged on day three, and Ads Manager needs 24 to 48 hours to show a conversion. Set the stop rule in writing before launch, then follow it.
You can do the first check yourself. Paid help earns its fee when the break is technical, such as cross-domain tracking, a pixel plus Conversions API setup, or linking leads to your CRM. If there is little traffic, no working CRM or an unclear offer, fix those first, because better tracking will not make a weak offer profitable. If you are comparing a different new ad tool, X's AI campaign builder needs the same check before it spends.
Ads Manager, for the record, is OpenAI's self-serve tool for building and reporting on ChatGPT ad campaigns, and it is in beta. Our pay-per-click work uses the same chain from spend to customer on every platform.
Can you tell whether your ChatGPT ad paid off?
Pick an answer to begin.
1. Ads Manager shows 40 conversions and your CRM shows 12 new customers. What is the most useful next step?
2. A new customer phones you with no tag on the visit. What can prove the call came from your ad?
3. What does OpenAI say about how conversions are credited?
Frequently Asked Questions About how to track chatgpt ads conversions
How do I know if my ChatGPT ad is working?
Compare spend, clicks, tagged visits, completed actions and qualified customers for the same dates. Ads Manager gives the first two and its conversion count. Your CRM, calendar or orders tell you whether those conversions became customers.
What does Ads Manager report?
OpenAI says Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Conversions need the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API or both.
Can I see ChatGPT ad leads in Google Analytics?
Yes, if you tag the ad link. Open Traffic acquisition and filter by your source, medium or campaign name, then look at key events for those sessions.
Why do OpenAI and Google Analytics show different conversions?
They use different attribution windows, timestamps, consent conditions and deduplication, and OpenAI credits the last touch. Match individual leads instead of comparing totals.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost, and what is the CPM?
Ads Manager shows your own average CPC and average CPM for each campaign. OpenAI says it has no cross-industry benchmarks yet, so track your own cost per qualified lead.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it?
Only your numbers can say. Measure cost per qualified lead or sale, compare it with what a customer is worth, and decide after a test with a stop rule written in advance.
Final Thoughts
To track ChatGPT ads conversions, you follow one chain: spend, click, tagged visit, completed action, qualified lead, sale. Ads Manager covers the first links, Google Analytics covers the visit and the action, and your own records cover the rest. Tag your links, send the right event from the confirmation step, and compare real leads against the dashboard instead of comparing totals.
Done once, this gives you a number you can defend: what a qualified lead or a customer from this channel costs. That number tells you when to keep going, when to change the offer and when to stop, and it carries over to any ad platform you try next.
If you want help setting that up, we at Web Leveling can build the tracking with you, from the tagged links to the events on your site to the source field in your lead records. Our generative engine optimization work covers how your business shows up and gets measured across AI tools, and you can contact us about your tracking to start.
