Is Bing Worth It for a Small Business? Yes, for 30 Minutes

Is Bing worth it for small business? It has 12.82% of US desktop search. See how Copilot and ChatGPT tie in, and the 30-minute setup that covers it.

You have spent your time and money on Google. Your Google Business Profile is claimed, your site is in Search Console, and your marketing calendar has a Google-shaped hole in every month. Then you read that Copilot runs on Bing, that ChatGPT search leans on it, and that phones may someday ask people to pick a search engine. Now it feels like customers could be finding a competitor somewhere you never looked. Is Bing worth it for a small business? A small amount of attention, yes: about thirty minutes of setup, done once, and then a number you check in a few months. It does not need its own campaign, its own content plan, or its own monthly fee. The numbers, the assistant connection and the exact steps that cover Bing are below.

Key Takeaways

Bing is small but not zero

StatCounter's August 2026 US figures put Bing at 12.82% of desktop search, 1.81% of mobile search and 8.92% across all platforms. Google holds 81.99% of desktop and 93.51% of mobile.

The assistant link is real but partial

Microsoft says Copilot can fetch information through Bing search, and OpenAI names Bing as a possible provider for ChatGPT Search. Not every ChatGPT answer comes from Bing.

Choice screens are not a US event

The EU and UK rules cover users in those places. Nothing in them changes the default search on a phone in the United States.

Thirty minutes covers it

Claim Bing Places, import your verified site into Bing Webmaster Tools, confirm your sitemap, turn on IndexNow if your platform supports it, and judge Bing by qualified leads after 60 to 90 days.

How much of US search actually happens on Bing?

Start with the size of the thing. StatCounter Global Stats reports these August 2026 shares for US search engines:

Across all platforms combined, StatCounter shows Bing at 8.92% in the same month. Those figures come from StatCounter's desktop data, its mobile data and its all-platform data. StatCounter counts browser-referred page views from participating websites, not unique people and not raw queries, so treat the numbers as a direction rather than a census. Its FAQ explains the method.

What does that mean for your business? If your customers search from a desk, a real slice of them are on Bing, and that slice is large enough to matter. If your customers search from a phone, Bing is a rounding error. Ask yourself which one describes the people who hire you. A bookkeeper, an insurance broker or a commercial cleaner who is found by office workers on a work laptop sits at one end. A mobile pet groomer or a food truck sits at the other.

A closed laptop and a phone lying face down on a plain wooden desk beside a blank notepad.
Desktop and phone searchers are different crowds, and Bing is strongest on the desktop.

Does ChatGPT use Bing, and does Copilot?

This is the question behind most of the worry, so take the two products separately.

Microsoft states that Copilot can fetch information from the Bing search service when web information helps ground an answer, and that the web-search queries Copilot generates are sent to Bing. You can read the wording in Microsoft's Copilot web access documentation and in its guide to how web search works in Copilot Chat.

For ChatGPT, OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT Search may share disassociated search queries with Bing to return web results, as described in its enterprise and education help article. OpenAI's ChatGPT Search announcement describes a tool that searches the web and returns links to sources. So Bing is a possible provider for some ChatGPT Search requests. It is not the only one, and a ChatGPT answer is not simply a Bing page reworded.

What that means for you is short. Accurate information about your business on Bing can reach people who ask an assistant, and you do not need a separate plan for each assistant. If you want more on getting mentioned in AI answers, our post on how to get cited by ChatGPT covers what to put on your own site.

Will a search engine choice screen change what US customers see?

Not in the United States. A choice screen is a prompt that asks a person to pick a default search engine or browser when they set up a device. The EU Digital Markets Act, under Article 6(3), requires designated gatekeepers to let users change defaults and to show choice screens for services such as browsers and search engines. The rules cover those gatekeepers and users in the European Union, as the Commission's Digital Markets Act pages explain.

The UK is moving on the same idea. The CMA designated Google as having strategic market status in general search on October 10, 2025, in its announcement. In September 2026 it published strengthened proposals on user choice, including a possible place for qualifying AI assistants on Android and Chrome. Those measures concern UK users. Our write-up of the UK CMA search choice screen proposal walks through what is on the table and the dates.

If you sell to UK or EU customers, a choice screen could eventually send some of them to Bing or an assistant, and accurate listings help in that case. If you sell in the US, a choice screen creates no new US traffic and no US deadline. Do not rush a project because of it.

What can I check on Bing in ten minutes?

Before you set anything up, look at what is already there. You can do all of this from your desk with no accounts beyond the ones you own.

  1. Search your business name on Bing. Add your city, your phone number and your main service in separate searches. Write down what shows up.
  2. Ask Copilot the same question. Type your business name and main service into Copilot and note whether you are mentioned, whether the description is right and whether the linked pages are yours.
  3. Look at Bing Places. See whether a listing exists, and whether the name, address, phone number, hours, category, service area, photos and website are correct.
  4. Open Bing Webmaster Tools. Check that your domain is verified and that a sitemap is listed.
  5. Run a `site:` search on Bing. Type `site:yourdomain.com` and see whether your main service and contact pages appear.

Write down every wrong hour, missing page, old address and description that points at the wrong page. That list is your work order, and it tells you whether the next step is a quick fix or something bigger.

What is the 30-minute Bing setup?

This order covers the ground with the least effort. Each step comes from Microsoft's own tools.

  1. Claim or create your listing in Bing Places for Business. Bing Places supports importing business information from your Google Business Profile, which saves retyping. Check the name, address, phone number, hours, website, category, service area, photos and map position before you finish.
  2. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. You can import a verified site straight from Google Search Console, and Bing says imported properties can be verified automatically and their sitemaps brought across. The steps are in Bing's guide to adding and verifying a site, and its getting started checklist lists what to do next.
  3. Confirm your XML sitemap. Make sure it exists, lists your important pages and is submitted for the right property. Inspect your top pages in Webmaster Tools.
  4. Turn on IndexNow if your platform supports it. IndexNow tells participating search engines when URLs are added, updated or deleted. Bing lists integrations and plugins for WordPress and other systems. On a custom site, you generate an API key, host the key file, submit changed URLs and confirm the submissions worked. Start with Bing's IndexNow guide.
  5. Set a reminder for 60 to 90 days. After Bing has collected data, look at impressions and clicks, and count the calls and forms that came from Bing.

IndexNow is a notification. It does not guarantee that Bing crawls, indexes or ranks a page, so do not read a submission as a result.

What usually goes wrong on Bing for a small business?

The problems are ordinary, and they are why a business can look fine on Google and thin on Bing. In rough order of how much they cost you:

  • No Bing Places listing, or an unclaimed duplicate.
  • Wrong hours, phone number, address, category or website on the listing.
  • A site that was never verified in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • A missing, outdated or wrong sitemap.
  • Pages blocked by `noindex`, robots rules, redirects or server errors, which keep them out of the index. Bing's page on why a site may not be in the index lists the causes to check.
  • Details that differ between your site, your directory listings and your profiles.
  • Thin service pages that never say what you do, for whom and where.
  • No way to tell Bing leads from other leads.

This order is a practical ranking by how much each miss costs and how fast it is to fix, not a measured national count. Fix the top of the list first and the bottom of it may never need attention.

What should I stop worrying about?

Bing will not overtake Google, and you do not need it to. On mobile, Bing sits at 1.81% against Google's 93.51%, so a plan built around beating Google there is a plan to spend money for very little.

Skip these:

  • A separate Bing campaign copied from your Google work. The same accurate business data and normal technical SEO serve both.
  • A new page for every assistant. Clear service pages that say what you do, where and for whom serve every system that reads them.
  • Treating every AI mention as an emergency. A business needs accurate, crawlable, useful information that assistants can cite. There is no guarantee a page is included in any answer.
  • Heavy spending before you have numbers. Wait until Bing impressions, clicks and conversions show a case.

Google fundamentals still come first. If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, your contact form is broken or your tracking is missing, fix those before anything on Bing.

Set Bing up once, then leave it alone until the numbers give you a reason to return.

Is it worth paying someone to handle Bing?

For a single-location business with a working site, usually not. The setup above is small enough to do yourself in one sitting, and there is no reason to pay a monthly fee for it.

Outside help earns its cost in specific cases: the ten-minute check turns up wrong listings across many places, your site has indexing or technical errors, you run multiple locations or an online catalog, you have service pages that say little, you sell to overseas audiences, or you have no reliable way to measure leads. In those cases a review can finish the setup quickly, find out whether Bing and assistant visibility produce qualified inquiries, and keep you from spending where the numbers do not justify it.

Your own measure is simple. Track Bing impressions, clicks, calls, forms and sales for 60 to 90 days, separately from Google. If Bing sends qualified leads, give it a little more care. If it sends none, you spent thirty minutes and learned something.

Frequently Asked Questions About is bing worth it for small business

Is Bing worth it for a small business?

Usually yes, for a low-cost setup and a measurement check. Bing is much smaller than Google, but StatCounter reported 12.82% of US desktop search in August 2026. Claim Bing Places, verify your site and judge Bing by qualified leads.

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT Search can share disassociated search queries with Bing to return web results. That covers some ChatGPT Search requests, not every ChatGPT answer.

Does Copilot use Bing search?

Microsoft says Copilot can fetch information from the Bing search service when web information helps ground an answer.

What should I do first on Bing?

Claim or correct your Bing Places listing, then add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. Both are free and take a short sitting.

Can I import my Google Search Console into Bing Webmaster Tools?

Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools supports importing verified sites and their sitemaps from Google Search Console, and imported properties can be verified automatically.

Will EU or UK choice screens affect my US business?

They do not change US defaults. Those rules apply to covered services and users in the EU or UK, so they matter to you only if you serve customers there.

The Bottom Line

Bing is not a rival to Google for a small US business, and it is not nothing. On the desktop it takes a visible share of searches, Copilot draws on it, and ChatGPT Search can use it for some requests. On mobile it barely registers. That mix is why the right response is a small, one-time setup and not a campaign.

Run the ten-minute check, then do the thirty-minute setup: Bing Places, Webmaster Tools, a sitemap and IndexNow. Fix Google's basics first if they are broken. Then look at Bing after 60 to 90 days and let calls and forms decide how much more attention it gets.

If the check turns up wrong listings, indexing errors or no way to track leads, Web Leveling can do the setup and the repair for you as part of our search engine optimization work. If the numbers say Bing is not worth more than the setup, we will tell you to stop there. We work with small and medium businesses across the country and overseas. Send us what your Bing check found, and we will tell you what is worth fixing.
