Google's advice on brand authority in Gemini search

Google's page on brand authority in Gemini search points to helpful answers, specific know-how and measured leads or sales. A small business can act on each.

You read Google's own page on brand authority in Gemini search, and it sounds like it was written for a company with a marketing department and a large budget. It was. The question underneath is still yours: what does Google actually recommend, and which parts can you do this month without hiring a team?

Google's answer is shorter than the sales pitches that have followed it. The page, published in October 2026, gives three priorities. Each one has a version you can do with a Google Account, your own website and a free afternoon, and none of them needs a paid program.

Customers who ask Gemini or AI Mode about your business may get a right answer, a wrong one or none at all. You can find out which in about ten minutes, and fix what you find.

Key Takeaways

Google's three priorities

"Follow the super-empowered consumer," "Fuel brand authority with unique expertise," and "Focus on business outcomes." Each has a small-business version that costs time rather than a media budget.

Ordinary search basics still apply

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org markup to add.

Check, fix, then measure

Ask AI Mode and Gemini about your business, compare the answers with your website and Business Profile, correct what is wrong, and track leads and sales in Search Console and Analytics.

What does Google's page on brand authority in Gemini search recommend?

The page is titled "Building brand authority in the Gemini era of Search". It was written by Brendon Kraham, VP, Search & Commerce Global Ads Solutions at Google, and is dated October 2026. It is addressed to CMOs and marketing leaders, so its examples assume large brands, product feeds and paid media.

Its three priorities are "Follow the super-empowered consumer." "Fuel brand authority with unique expertise." "Focus on business outcomes." Google expands them into advice to give specific, helpful answers, publish genuine experience instead of generic content, keep websites, apps and product feeds fast and easy to use, coordinate paid, owned and earned media, and measure leads or sales. It also says its generative experiences remain anchored in "core ranking and quality systems," and that brands should "focus on helping your customer, and they will find you."

Two figures on the page come from Ipsos research that Google cites. People who use AI search visit "12 touchpoints across their buying process, nearly 3X more than in non-AI journeys," and "3 in 4 people report that AI features help them make faster, more confident decisions." Read them as Google's reported survey findings, not as numbers for your trade or your town.

How does a small business act on each of Google's three priorities?

A large brand turns each priority into a program. You can turn each one into a task of an hour or two. The work is mostly writing, checking and counting, and the tools are free. Take them in Google's order.

Follow the super-empowered consumer: answer what customers ask

Google's first priority is about the person asking the question. Write down the questions people ask before they hire or buy from you, then answer each one on a page of your own site in a few direct sentences. Add the price range, the timing or the next step whenever you can state it. AI Mode handles comparisons and follow-up questions, so a page that answers the next question gives a person a reason to click through instead of stopping at a summary.

Show what only your business knows

Google's own example for this priority is a running store that makes a video about why one customer's shoes collapsed, instead of another generic top-10 list. The small-business version is the same move. Document a real job, a real product failure or a real customer question that only you can speak to, with photos or a short video. Google's helpful content guidance asks whether content has original value, avoids factual errors and gives readers reasons to trust the site, so say who wrote the page and what experience they have.

A real failure, documented, gives people something a generic list cannot.

Focus on business outcomes: count leads and sales

The third priority is measurement. Set up a way to count what matters: a form that records a completed submission, a phone number you can track, or a question you ask every new caller about how they found you. Then read Search Console and Analytics next to that count. A mention in Gemini that never turns into a call is a data point, and the sale is the result.

What do Google's help pages say about appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google's Search Central documents say the same search basics apply to AI features. The AI features documentation and the AI optimization guide back these actions:

  • Let Google crawl and index your pages.
  • Link your pages to each other.
  • Put important information in text, not only in images.
  • Use structured data that is accurate, where it fits.
  • Write helpful, reliable, people-first content with original information.

Google says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode" and "There's no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." It says it ignores llms.txt for Search visibility and rankings, and that seeking "inauthentic mentions" is not helpful because its systems focus on high-quality content and block spam. Indexing and serving are never guaranteed, so no one can promise you a citation.

Ads are paid placements, and a paid placement is separate from an organic AI citation. If you already rank well and the AI answer still skips you, our post on why you can rank on page one and AI never mentions you covers the usual gaps. For the trust signals that sit on top of these basics, see what makes AI search trust a business.

Which Google tools are involved, and what do they cost?

Google's page mentions websites, product feeds, video, owned media and paid media. Each Google product behind those has its own rules, and none of them is a separate brand authority program. The tools a small business needs first are free.

Start with the one you control completely. Google's Business Profile Help says accurate hours, phone numbers, websites, locations, photos, videos, services and reviews help customers find and evaluate a business. That is the part our Google Business Profile management work covers, and you can also do it yourself in an afternoon. If you sell products, Merchant Center has its own data rules, and Google Ads is paid placement with no organic guarantee attached.

How do you see AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. It also added a branded queries filter that splits searches containing your business name from everything else. That split shows whether people already know you or find you for what you do.

Search Console reporting dates

  1. 1

    November 20, 2025

Google announces the [branded queries filter](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/11/search-console-branded-filter) in Search Console.

    March 11, 2026

The branded queries filter becomes available to eligible sites.

  3. 3

    June 3, 2026

Google announces dedicated [Search Generative AI performance reports](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports).

  4. 4

    August 31, 2026

Google states the rollout of those reports to all websites worldwide is complete.

  5. 5

    October 2026

Google publishes the brand authority page.

Google says its brand classification can include variations, misspellings and unique products or services, and can occasionally be wrong. So, read the branded filter as a guide and not a verdict. Search Console shows how people reach your site. To see what Gemini says about you in a given answer, ask it directly and record the reply.

What can you check about your own business in ten minutes?

This check gives you an observable starting point. It is a sample from one day, one account and one location, so repeat it in a few weeks and record the date each time. AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, and their answers and links vary.

The ten-minute check

Ask

Put "What does [your business] do?", "Is [your business] a good choice for [your service]?" and "Which [service] providers serve [your area]?" to Google AI Mode, then to Gemini.

Record

Write down each answer, what it leaves out, what it gets wrong and the sources it links.

Compare

Check those statements against your website, About page, services, hours, phone number, service area and Business Profile.

Correct

Fix inconsistencies at the source, starting with the Business Profile and the pages the answers linked to.

Measure

Open Search Console for branded queries and generative reporting, then Analytics for leads, calls and sales.

Fixing one mismatch is a smaller job than it sounds. If the answer quotes old hours, change them in your Business Profile. If it describes your services vaguely, rewrite the service page around what customers actually ask. If a cited page is not indexed, Search Console will tell you. Our guide to what generative engine optimization is explains how this work fits alongside ordinary SEO.

Ten minutes, one notebook, and a written record you can compare next month.

When does it make sense to pay someone for help?

You can run the whole check alone. Google says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, so a special GEO service, special schema or a paid Google program is not a first purchase.

Help earns a role when the check turns up something you cannot fix yourself: crawling or indexing defects, a Business Profile that conflicts with your website, thin pages, product feed errors, tracking that does not record leads, several locations to keep consistent, or no time to do any of it. Those jobs sit in web development, search engine optimization, profile management, content and analytics, and no one can promise a citation or a date for one.

If your foundations are accurate and measurable, a limited audit or maintenance you run yourself may fit better than a large monthly retainer. Ask any provider for a scoped audit, the deliverables, a measurement plan and the fee, and look for a report that shows the defects found, the changes made and the leads or sales that followed.

Check your brand authority basics

Pick an answer to begin.

1. Which audience is Google's "Building brand authority in the Gemini era of Search" page written for?

2. Which of these does Google say you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode?

3. A Gemini answer names your business with the wrong hours. What is the first fix?

Does Google require special SEO for Gemini or AI Overviews?

No. Google says ordinary SEO fundamentals apply and there are no additional technical requirements.

Does llms.txt improve Google AI visibility?

No. Google says it ignores llms.txt for Search visibility and rankings.

Does structured data guarantee an AI citation?

No. Google says there is no special schema required for generative AI features, and accurate structured data is useful only where it fits your content.

Does a Business Profile help customers find a business?

Yes. It can show accurate hours, contact details, location or service area, photos, services and reviews. Eligibility rules apply, and it requires a Google Account and verification.

Can Search Console measure AI visibility?

Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Performance report under the Web search type, and offers Search Generative AI performance reports. To see what Gemini says about you, ask it and record the answer.

Should a business buy Google Ads to appear in AI answers?

Ads are paid placements, and they do not guarantee an organic AI citation. Spend on ads for the leads they bring, not for an AI mention.

Moving Forward

Google's three priorities are work you can do: answer what customers ask, publish what only you know, and count leads and sales. The basics underneath have not changed. Pages Google can crawl and index, accurate details on your Business Profile and website, and helpful content written for people are what Google itself points to.

Doing this once gives you a record of what AI answers say about you today and a list of fixes in order. Repeat the check every few weeks and the changes show up in Search Console and in your inquiries, whatever Gemini does next.

If you would like a second set of eyes, Web Leveling can run the check with you and fix what it turns up, from your Business Profile to your site structure to your tracking, through our generative engine optimization work. We work with small and medium businesses across the country and overseas. Contact us about your AI search check and we will tell you what needs fixing and what you can leave alone.
