Canva layoffs: are your designs and brand kit still safe?

Canva layoffs: the staff note announced no change to plans, prices or access. A ten-minute check gives you copies of your logo, colors, fonts and designs.

You saw the Canva layoffs headline and went straight to your own files: the logo on your van, the menu you reprint every season, a year of social posts. Canva's staff note, sent by CEO Melanie Perkins and published November 3, 2026, is about Canva's people and organization. Canva announced no change to Canva Free, Pro, Teams, Business or Affinity access, no product shutdown, no price increase and no deletion of customer designs.

The figure in the headlines comes from that note: 1,271 people, or 22% of Canva, "will be impacted." Canva says the total covers role changes, relocation to centralized hubs and people leaving. The note does not split the 1,271 into those groups, so it is not a count of job losses.

Your part is small. Download the designs you rely on, keep your logo files, brand colors and font names somewhere you control, and know what Canva's terms say about logos built from Canva elements. The whole check takes about ten minutes.

Key Takeaways

The note is about staff

Canva's November 3, 2026 note says 1,271 people, or 22% of Canva, will be impacted, and announced no change for customers, plans, prices or Affinity.

Download before any plan change

Exports are copies, so download the designs you rely on in the right format before you downgrade or cancel anything.

Keep the brand basics outside Canva

Write down your hex colors, logo variations and font names, and save the original logo and font files.

A logo made with Canva elements may not be exclusive

Canva's logo guidance says stock or template artwork is non-exclusive and generally unsuitable for trademark registration.

Keep your designs and plan as they are: what Canva's note covers

Canva's note was written for employees. In it, Perkins says "our growth has slowed for the first time in a decade," and describes a new structure: Product, Growth and Platform combine into one Product Org, there are fewer management layers, and Sydney becomes the primary home for more product teams. People who leave receive at least six months of salary. You can read it on Canva's newsroom.

For you as a customer, the useful part is what the note leaves untouched. It announced no change to your plan, your price, your support or your saved designs. Canva also says it intends to "refound" the company and keep investing in its products and community. That describes direction, not a promise about every future feature or price, so the safe habit is to keep your own copies whatever any company announces.

Save the designs you rely on in formats you can reopen

Start with the five or ten designs you use most: the menu, the flyer, the sign, the posts you reuse. Canva Help lists the download formats by design type: JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG, PDF Standard, PDF Print, and video. PPTX is for presentations only and DOCX for Canva Docs only. Download each key design as a PDF and as a PNG.

A download is a copy, not an editable Canva project. A PDF or PNG will print and post, but you cannot reopen it in Canva with its layers. Canva Help also says PPTX and DOCX files may look different from the original, and fonts may need installing on the computer that opens them.

A saved PDF prints the same on any computer, with or without a Canva login.

Plan matters for logos. Canva Help says transparent PNG and SVG exports are available to Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva for Education and Canva for Nonprofits. On Canva Free you can download PNG, JPG and PDF, but a logo with a see-through background needs a paid plan. Download the transparent version while you have it.

Keep your logo, colors and fonts where you control them

Your Brand Kit holds your logos, colors, fonts and templates inside Canva. Open it and write the details into a plain document: each color's hex value, each logo variation and its use (full color, white, icon only), and every font name. A Brand Kit is a working tool, not a backup of the original files.

Uploads are the second stop. Canva Help says uploaded files can generally be downloaded from the Uploads area, including images, videos, Affinity files, ZIP files, HTML and INDD files. Download your original logo files and any photos you paid for or shot yourself.

Fonts need the most care. Canva supports uploaded OTF, TTF and WOFF fonts, subject to embedding rights, as Canva's font upload page explains. Save the original font files, and next to each font name note where you got it and what its license allows. A font name alone is hard to trace later, and a license you cannot find is a problem in any program.

Canva's Terms of Use, updated October 30, 2026, say users retain ownership of their User Content. Designs that contain Canva Licensed Content stay under the Content License Agreement that applies to that content. Read the Terms of Use for the exact wording on your plan.

Logos have their own guidance. Canva says a logo made from stock graphics or a Canva template is non-exclusive and generally unsuitable for trademark registration, while an original logo you drew from basic shapes and fonts, or uploaded, carries different rights. Its logo and trademark page covers the details. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office explains what trademark rights protect and how registration works.

If your logo started as a Canva template, the safe move is to keep a record of how it was built and ask a professional before you file anything. Our post on using a Canva logo for your business goes through the rights question in full.

Finish a ten-minute check you can repeat

These pieces fit in one sitting. Work through them in this order, with a folder on your computer or a business drive open beside Canva:

  • Brand Kit: Write down each hex color, every logo variation and every font name with its license.
  • Uploads: Download your original logos and the photos and files you rely on.
  • Key designs: Save your five or ten most-used designs as PDF and PNG, and your logo as a transparent PNG or SVG if your plan allows.
  • Check the files: Open a few downloads to confirm they read properly and that fonts and images look right.
  • Label and store: Add today's date to the folder name and keep it somewhere your business controls, not only in one person's login.

That folder is your working set outside Canva. A staff member, a printer or a web designer can use it tomorrow without asking anyone for a password.

Your menus, flyers and window posters live in more places than one Canva account.

Check your plan and billing page before you change anything

Canva Help says Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades, and existing customers may see plan-specific arrangements. If you are on Teams, open your billing page to see what applies to your account. The plan comparison page explains how Canva describes its paid plans.

Plan limits also affect what you can store. Canva's pricing page lists Canva Free with one Brand Kit holding three colors and 5GB of storage, and Canva Pro with five Brand Kits and 100GB. If you outgrew the Free limits, check which logos and colors never made it into the Brand Kit.

What happens to your designs after a plan is cancelled is a question for Canva Help and your own account. The step that works either way is the download. Take the files before any downgrade or cancellation, and you keep working copies whatever Canva's answer turns out to be.

If a design looks missing, check that you are signed in to the account and email you used to make it, then contact Canva Help from inside that account. Canva's note announced no deletion of customer designs.

Know when a professional brand set is worth paying for

You can do this check yourself, and Canva still works for plenty of businesses. You do not need to hire anyone because of this announcement. Keep Canva if it fits how you work.

A conversation with a brand professional starts to pay off when the folder you just made shows a larger problem:

  • Large design library: Years of designs, with logo or color variations that do not match across documents.
  • Several editors: More than one person changes the logo, colors or templates.
  • Missing sources: Original logo files are gone, or nobody can confirm a font license.
  • Many places to match: Print needs, several locations, or a website that needs the same assets.
  • Trademark questions: A logo you may want to register, built from Canva elements.

Our guide to brand guidelines for a small business shows what a finished set contains. If one platform running your business keeps you up at night, own your audience when a platform shuts your account covers the same habit for followers and customer lists.

Moving Forward

Canva's November 3, 2026 note is about its staff and its structure, and it announced nothing that changes your plan, price or saved designs. The 1,271 figure is Canva's count of people impacted, covering role changes, relocation and departures. What you control is the set of files you keep.

A labeled folder with your logo files, hex colors, font names and key designs gives you a working set outside Canva. It also helps the next time a plan changes, a price moves or a login goes missing.
