## What we did

Cal's Best Finds began as a general deals site on WordPress, the kind of site that competes with everything and stands for nothing. The rebuild gave it one question to answer, and it is the question every audiobook buyer already has before they spend a credit: is it worth the hours, and is the narrator any good?

So, every review carries two scores instead of one, one for the writing and one for the narration. A book worth reading can be unlistenable in the wrong voice, and a modest book can be carried by the right one; a single star rating hides which of the two you would be paying for. Around that sit narrator spotlights, author spotlights and read-or-listen comparisons, so a reader can follow a voice they trust instead of gambling on a title they have never heard of.

That is a thing the old site could not have done and a thing most review sites still do not do. The site is hand-built in Next.js and ships as static files, so it opens instantly, and the domain, the hosting, the analytics and the email list are all in the owner's name.
