# Google Maps Messaging: Who Answers and How to Turn It On

Eligible customers can message your business from Google Maps with a Message button beside Call. See where messages go, who replies, and how to turn it on.

![A bike shop owner in a work apron stands in the open roll-up door of the shop at dusk, looking down at a phone held at an angle, bikes and wheels on racks behind in warm shop light against a deep blue evening sky.](https://webleveling.com/blog/message-businesses-from-google-maps/maps-messaging-featured.jpg)

Customers can now message a business on Google Maps with one tap, and the first thing you want to know is where that message lands. It lands wherever you point it: a WhatsApp account or a phone number that can receive texts. Nobody at Google answers for you, and no new inbox appears on your profile.

Google's Small Business Bulletin of November 5, 2026 says messaging expanded on Google Maps for Android and iOS. On eligible listings, a Message button now sits beside Call. Whether your listing has it depends on your region and on whether you have set up a messaging option.

If you work alone, or you are locking up for the evening when a text arrives on your phone, the setting itself takes a few minutes. The part that decides whether it helps you is what happens after the tap: who sees the message, who replies, and what a customer sees when nobody does.

**Key Takeaways**

**The Message button is new, the inbox is not**

Google's Small Business Bulletin of November 5, 2026 says a Message button now sits beside Call in Google Maps on Android and iOS, and it routes customers to the WhatsApp or text option you set up.

**Turning it on takes a few taps in your profile**

A claimed and verified profile can go to Edit profile, Contact, Chat, then choose WhatsApp or Text message and enter a click-to-chat link or a number that can receive texts.

**Someone has to own the replies**

Messages go to the destination you chose, so name one person who answers, send alerts to someone current, and decide what happens after hours.

**Test from a different phone**

A message sent from a separate account or phone shows you what a customer sees and proves a person can answer it.

## How does messaging from Google Maps work for your business?

A customer opens your listing in Google Maps and sees a Message button next to Call. Google says that button can appear in the expanded profile header or in the bottom action bar, and that it used to sit deeper in the profile. Tapping it sends the customer to the messaging option your business has set up, either WhatsApp or SMS/Text. Google's bulletin names Android and iOS as the two platforms.

![A cyclist in a rain jacket stopped on a bike path beside a park, one foot on the ground, typing a message on a phone held at an angle, a flat tire visible on the front wheel under grey midday light.](https://webleveling.com/blog/message-businesses-from-google-maps/maps-messaging-street-customer.jpg)

A customer with a problem on the road may message before they call.

Availability varies by region and by profile eligibility, so the button may not show on every listing yet. Google's help page on [chatting with customers from your Business Profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/15013580) says chat options are available only in selected regions, and that a business needs a claimed and verified profile to add one. Check your own listing on a phone before you tell anyone it is there.

Google's bulletin also carries a plain tip: turn on chat in your Business Profile so local customers can reach you directly through Search and Maps. Treat that as an invitation to set up a contact channel. Google describes the change as easier access for customers, so judge the button by the conversations you answer, and leave rankings out of the decision.

## How do you turn on messaging in your Business Profile?

You need to be signed in to the Google account that manages a claimed and verified profile. The steps below follow [Google's Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/15013580), and the screens can change, so go by the labels rather than the exact position of a button.

1. Open your Business Profile, on a phone or by searching your business name while signed in.
2. Select Edit profile, then Contact.
3. Select Chat.
4. Choose WhatsApp or Text message.
5. Enter a WhatsApp click-to-chat link, or a phone number that can receive texts, and save.

If you add both a WhatsApp option and a text option, only the text option is shown to customers. So, pick one on purpose. If your customers already use WhatsApp for orders or questions, point the button there. If your business line is a landline or a number that cannot receive texts, a text option will not work, and WhatsApp or a different mobile number is the better choice.

To turn it off, go back to the same place and remove or change the Chat option. A customer who tapped Call still reaches your phone either way, so removing chat does not remove your other contact buttons.

## Who sees the message, and who should answer?

The message goes to the destination you entered, so the answer to "who sees it" is whoever has that WhatsApp account or that phone in their pocket. Confirm who can see that destination in the WhatsApp or phone settings your business actually uses, and give one person the job of answering.

That makes the person, not the setting, the weak point. A business number that rings in a drawer, a WhatsApp account tied to a former employee, or a phone with notifications silenced will turn a helpful button into an unanswered question. Google's help page on [managing your notifications](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7198436) covers profile alerts, and your own phone settings decide whether a WhatsApp or text alert actually buzzes.

Standard messaging and Google's AI-enabled messaging are two different features. The table shows where each one lives.

Standard messaging versus AI-enabled messaging, as Google describes them

| | Standard chat (WhatsApp or text) | AI-enabled messaging (RCS for Business) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where the customer's message goes | The WhatsApp account or text number you entered | An AI agent answers first |
| Where you reply | In WhatsApp or your phone's messages | Messages on Google Search or Inbox in Google Business Home |
| Who must set it up | Any claimed and verified profile in a supported region | Eligible businesses, with additional review |
| Handoff to a person | You are the person answering | Select Take over, then Resume AI agent when done |
| Setup page | [Chat with customers from your Business Profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/15013580) | [Get started with AI-enabled messaging](https://support.google.com/business/answer/17003851) |

If an AI agent is something you are curious about, our post on [Google's AI replies to customer messages](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-business-profile-ai-replies-to-customer-messages/) covers that feature on its own, so this post stays with standard Maps messaging.

## What happens when you are closed or busy?

Google sets no response clock for standard chat, so the reply target is yours to set. Write one down that fits your business: for a shop that closes at six, "same day before close, first thing next morning" is a rule you can keep. For a solo contractor on a roof, it may be "by lunch and again at the end of the day." A target you can keep beats a fast one you cannot.

After hours, decide in advance what a customer sees. You can leave the option on and answer in the morning, or you can remove the Chat option for a vacation week and add it back when you return. Either choice works, as long as it is a choice and not an accident.

One name and one set of hours make it clear who answers messages.

For the AI-enabled version, Google gives a firm number. During business hours, a handoff to a person that goes unanswered for one hour returns to the AI agent, which tells the customer to call. That makes the one-hour mark a deadline worth knowing if you use that feature, and it shows why a named person with working alerts matters.

Customers who message can also block or report a business as spam, according to [Google Maps Help](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/9093589). Google Maps also tells customers not to share card numbers, bank details, Social Security numbers, passwords or health records in chat, so do not ask for them in a message. Move those steps to a secure form or a phone call.

## Is this the chat Google ended in 2024?

No. The messages go somewhere different now. Google retired the original Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024, according to its [help page on the change](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14919056). The Maps button routes customers to WhatsApp or your text number, and no returning chat inbox lives inside your profile.

Google's Small Business Bulletin says messaging expanded on Google Maps for Android and iOS, with a Message button beside Call on eligible listings.

That difference changes how you prepare. If your team learned a routine for the old inbox, retire it, because nothing in the profile receives messages now. Write down the new destination in one sentence, such as "Maps messages arrive in WhatsApp on the shop phone, and the owner answers them," and share it with anyone who covers the shop.

Messaging is also a different matter from booking. If you want customers to schedule directly from your listing, a booking link does a different job, which our post on the [Google Business Profile booking link](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-business-profile-booking-link/) walks through.

## How do you test the Message button before customers use it?

Test it from the customer's side, because the owner account shows you settings, not the customer view. Use a separate Google account, or a different phone that is not signed in as the manager. A phone owned by an employee or a friend works well.

**A ten-minute test of your Maps messaging**

**Check the setting**

In Edit profile, Contact, Chat, confirm the destination is WhatsApp or Text message and that it is the one you intended.

**Check the destination**

Confirm the number can receive texts, or that the WhatsApp link opens the right business account.

**Find the button**

From a separate account or phone, open your listing in Google Maps and look for Message beside Call.

**Send and answer**

Send a test question, find out where it arrives, and reply as a customer would expect.

**Write the rule down**

Record who replies, who gets the alert, and what happens after hours.

A second phone is the only way to see what a customer sees, and it takes less time than waiting for the first real message to find out.

![The bike shop owner sitting on an upturned crate in the back alley at a morning break, holding a phone at an angle while a coworker in an apron leans in the doorway holding a second phone out toward her.](https://webleveling.com/blog/message-businesses-from-google-maps/maps-messaging-test-from-sidewalk.jpg)

A second phone shows exactly what a customer sees.

If the button does not show on the test phone, check the common causes in order: no Chat option saved, a profile that is not yet verified, or a region where Google has not turned the option on. Chat options are limited to selected regions, so a missing button can be on Google's side, and the Business Profile Help page is where to confirm your region.

Run the test again after any change of staff, phone number or WhatsApp account. The most common failure is a destination that nobody on the team reads.

## When is outside help worth paying for?

A single verified location with one monitored number and a simple setup may need no outside help. You can run the ten-minute test yourself, write down who answers, and move on. That route costs you an afternoon at most.

Paid help starts to make sense when the setup gets more tangled. That can mean several locations, unclear ownership of replies, alerts that go to the wrong people, profile details that are out of date, an AI handoff process, or inquiries you keep missing. In that case the work is setup, testing, written ownership rules and ongoing monitoring across the systems you already use. It is ordinary operations work, and Google Maps gives nobody special access to speed it up.

A message that gets answered becomes a customer walking in.

If you do want a second set of hands, our [Google Business Profile management](https://webleveling.com/services/google-business-profile-management/) service covers profile accuracy and contact setup, and the [AI automation](https://webleveling.com/services/ai-automation/) team can build a controlled handoff process when an AI agent is part of the plan. Nothing here promises more bookings or faster replies, and you can finish most of this with the steps above and no outside help.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Messaging From Google Maps

**Can customers message a business from Google Maps?**

Yes, on eligible listings. Google's Small Business Bulletin of November 5, 2026 says messaging expanded on Google Maps for Android and iOS, with a Message button beside Call.

**Where do the messages go?**

To the WhatsApp account or text number you set up in your profile. If your business uses Google's AI-enabled messaging, those conversations are managed in Messages on Google Search or Inbox in Google Business Home.

**How do I turn messaging on?**

Open your claimed and verified Business Profile, select Edit profile, Contact, Chat, then choose WhatsApp or Text message and enter a click-to-chat link or a number that can receive texts.

**Can I turn messaging off?**

Yes. Go back to the Chat setting in your profile and remove or change the option.

**How fast do I have to reply?**

Google sets no standard response time for chat, so choose a target you can keep and write it down. For AI-enabled messaging during business hours, a handoff unanswered for one hour returns to the AI agent, which tells the customer to call.

**Does turning on messaging help my Google Maps ranking?**

Google's announcement describes easier access to messaging. Treat it as a contact channel for customers, and judge it by the conversations you answer.

## The Bottom Line

Messaging from Google Maps puts a Message button next to Call on eligible listings, and it sends customers to the WhatsApp or text destination you choose. Setup takes a few taps in your profile, and the work that matters comes afterward: one person who owns replies, alerts that reach someone current, a decision about after hours, and a test from a separate phone that you answered yourself.

The old Business Profile chat is gone, and the new button does not bring it back, so give your team the new routine in writing. A reply target you can keep, a monitored number and a quick test after any staffing change will keep this channel from becoming a place where questions sit unanswered.
