# Google Ads in AI Mode: what the test means for your campaigns

No advertiser opt-in is documented for Personal Intelligence. Check search terms, costs and change history; Google documents no separate AI Mode report.

![A closed laptop, a small notebook and a pencil arranged on a clean wooden desk.](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-in-ai-mode-personal-intelligence/google-ads-ai-mode-featured.jpg)

Nobody sent you a notice, yet you keep hearing that Google Ads in AI Mode may be putting your ads inside AI answers. If you pay for Google Ads, the questions come fast. Did Google switch something on for you? Is it charging you for it? Can you see it?

Google announced on [May 21, 2025](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/google-search-ai-brand-discovery/) that it was starting to test ads in AI Mode, in English in the United States. It named Performance Max, Shopping and Search campaigns using broad match, including AI Max for Search, as eligible.

Eligible is not the same as enrolled in a new program. You can find out whether your account fits in about ten minutes, using reports you already have.

**Key Takeaways**

**Eligible, not enrolled**

Google named Performance Max, Shopping and broad-match Search campaigns, including AI Max for Search, as eligible for the AI Mode ad test. Your campaign type and settings decide whether your account fits.

**Personal Intelligence sits on the searcher's side**

It connects a person's Gmail and Google Photos to their AI Mode answers. Google describes it as a Search feature, not as something an advertiser turns on.

**Plan around search terms, not an AI Mode report**

Reported search terms may be an approximation of what the person meant, and a long, chatty query is a clue, not proof of an AI Mode click.

**Narrowing eligibility has a price**

Tighter settings can also cut your regular Search or Shopping reach, so change one thing at a time and compare against an earlier period.

## Is my Google Ads account part of the AI Mode test?

Your account is a candidate if it runs one of three campaign types. Google named Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns that use broad match, including AI Max for Search. Google's announcement described the test in English in the United States, and [Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16290177) repeated on May 21, 2025 that this is a test, not a universal rollout.

Search campaigns built only on exact match keywords sit outside those named types. If your campaigns target other countries or languages, confirm your eligibility in Google Ads Help, because test details can change.

What Google has said, and when

| Date | What Google said | What it means for you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| May 21, 2025 | Google began testing ads in AI Mode, in English in the US | Eligibility depends on campaign type and targeting |
| May 21, 2025 | Google Ads Help described it as a test | Not every account or search will show AI Mode ads |
| January 22, 2026 | AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers could opt in to connect Gmail and Photos | Personalization is a choice the searcher makes |
| I/O 2026 | Personal Intelligence expanded to nearly 200 countries and territories, in 98 languages, without a subscription | More searchers may use it; this is a user feature |

Google also says ads in AI Mode may appear below or integrated into AI Mode responses, and that relevance draws on the searcher's query and the AI response. Where an ad lands is Google's call. Nothing in your account lets you buy a guaranteed spot.

![A closed laptop beside a pencil and a blank paper checklist on a wooden desk.](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-in-ai-mode-personal-intelligence/eligibility-checklist-pencil.jpg)

Start with a list of your campaigns and their types, because eligibility follows the campaign.

## Does Personal Intelligence turn on ads for my business?

No. Personal Intelligence is a Search feature for the person searching. [Google describes it](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/personal-intelligence-ai-mode-search/) as a way to connect information from Google services, including Gmail and Google Photos, to AI Mode answers. On January 22, 2026, Google said AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers could opt in to connect Gmail and Photos.

Google later said at [I/O 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/) that the feature was expanding to more people, in nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages, without requiring a subscription.

That changes who sees personalized AI Mode answers. It does not add a setting to your Google Ads account, and Google describes it as a searcher feature, not an advertiser enrollment. Treat it as a reason your searchers may be phrasing questions differently, and look at what they typed.

## Do clicks from AI Mode cost money?

An ad click is an ad click. A click on an eligible ad is handled through Google Ads auction and billing rules, so your budget, bid strategy and conversion goals still govern what you pay. Open your Google Ads account and compare cost, clicks and conversions for the weeks before and after the date you first noticed something odd.

If cost per conversion jumped, look at which campaign moved before you blame AI Mode. A sudden cost change is a reason to check settings; it does not show that Google changed your account behind your back. For a refresher on what normal spend looks like, see [how much Google Ads cost](https://webleveling.com/blog/how-much-do-google-ads-cost/).

If a campaign now reaches its budget earlier in the day than it used to, that is a sign to look at the search terms next.

## How can I see AI Mode traffic in my account?

Plan on reading the effect instead of finding a label. Google says the search term shown for AI Mode may be the best approximation of what the person meant, rather than the exact words they typed. A long, conversational term may come from an AI Mode session, or it may be ordinary broad-match traffic. You cannot tell which from the wording alone.

So, do not wait for a report line that says AI Mode. Use the reports Google does give you: the Search terms report, campaign cost and conversion data, landing page reports, channel reporting for Performance Max, and Change history. Together they show whether something shifted, when it shifted, and whether it paid off.

Compare a period before the change with a period after, using the same number of days.

## What should I check in my account first?

Work through your campaigns in this order. Each step builds on the one before it, and you can finish the set in a single sitting.

Write down what you find as you go, with dates. A page of notes now is the baseline you will compare against after any change.

### Which type is each campaign?

Open every active campaign and record whether it is Search, Performance Max or Shopping. Record the budget and the bid strategy too. Only the three types Google named are in the test, so a quick pass here can clear several campaigns at once.

### Is AI Max, broad match or final URL expansion on?

For Search campaigns, check whether AI Max or broad match is active. For Performance Max, review search themes, final URL expansion, asset groups and negative keywords. For Shopping, check feed quality in Merchant Center and any AI Max settings. Our post on [AI Max settings](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-ai-max-september-2026/) walks through that switch in more detail.

### What changed in cost, clicks and conversions?

Pick the date your concern began. Compare cost, clicks, conversions and cost per conversion for the same number of days before and after it. Keep the comparison to like periods, so a holiday week is not set against an ordinary one.

### Do the search terms look different since that date?

Open the [Search terms report](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-search-terms-report/) and sort by cost. Look for new, longer, question-style terms that appeared after your date. Ask of each one whether it is a person who could buy from you. A long query is a clue, not a verdict, and a term that converts is doing its job whatever it looks like.

### What does Change history say?

Open Change history and look for edits near your date. A new automation setting, a bid change, or a changed budget can explain a shift that looks mysterious. Note who made each change and when.

![A wall calendar with several dates circled in pencil, beside a small notebook, on a desk.](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-in-ai-mode-personal-intelligence/change-date-calendar.jpg)

A circled date gives every report a starting line to compare against.

Account checks and where to run them

| What to check | Campaign type | Where to look |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Is AI Max or broad match on? | Search | Campaign settings |
| Search themes and final URL expansion | Performance Max | Campaign and asset group settings |
| Feed quality and AI Max settings | Shopping | Merchant Center and campaign settings |
| Cost, clicks and conversions by period | All | Campaign reports |
| New long or question-style terms | All | Search terms report |
| Edits near the change date | All | Change history |

## Can I opt out of AI Mode ads?

You have campaign controls, and they work on eligibility rather than on an AI Mode switch. Google's [Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817) lists the levers: budgets, locations, bidding, broad match or AI Max settings, negative keywords, URL exclusions, brand exclusions, landing pages and conversion goals. Performance Max also supports placement exclusions, content suitability controls and campaign-level negative keywords. Plan around these levers, and check your campaign settings from time to time, since test details can change.

Use them where traffic is irrelevant. Add [negative keywords](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-negative-keywords/) for terms that never turn into customers, exclude URLs that should not receive that traffic, and send each campaign to a landing page that answers the longer, more specific question people are now asking.

Keep one trade-off in mind before you change anything. Narrowing eligibility can reduce your other Search or Shopping reach as well. Switching off AI Max or broad match does not remove every AI-related placement either, so do not expect a clean, single-cause result. Change one setting, wait for enough data, and compare.

![A narrow funnel and a wide bowl placed together on a kitchen counter beside a measuring cup.](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-ads-in-ai-mode-personal-intelligence/narrow-reach-funnel.jpg)

Tightening a setting catches less of what you do not want and less of what you do.

## When is paid help worth it?

You can run the audit alone. Everything above uses screens that your Google Ads login already shows you, and the first pass takes an afternoon at most.

Paid help earns its fee when the account cannot answer the questions above. Common cases are conversion tracking that is incomplete or counts low-value actions as conversions, several campaigns that overlap, Performance Max reach that is broad, and spend that you cannot tie to booked jobs or revenue. A baseline and a documented change log also pay off when more than one person edits the account.

Be cautious of anyone who promises a guaranteed AI Mode placement, tells you Personal Intelligence requires a new campaign, or sells a special AI Mode package. The work that helps is the same work as before: accurate tracking, clean campaign structure, useful negatives, relevant landing pages, and a regular look at cost per qualified lead. Showing up in organic AI answers is a different problem from paid eligibility; our post on [seeing how your business shows up in Google AI Mode](https://webleveling.com/blog/see-how-your-business-shows-up-in-google-ai-mode/) covers that side.

## Moving Forward

Google announced a test of ads in AI Mode on May 21, 2025, in English in the United States. Performance Max, Shopping and broad-match Search campaigns, including AI Max for Search, are the named types. Personal Intelligence is a searcher-side feature, and you cannot turn it on for your account.

Your next steps are the ones within reach: identify campaign types, check AI Max and broad match, compare periods, read the search terms and review Change history. Keep notes with dates, because they let you see what a setting change did.

If your tracking or campaign structure leaves those questions unanswered, [Web Leveling](https://webleveling.com/) can look at the account with you. Our [Google Ads management](https://webleveling.com/services/google-ads-management/) work starts with conversion tracking and search terms, and ties spend to booked jobs or sales.
