# Google Business Profile buttons: where each one comes from

Google Business Profile buttons come from different places: your profile, your own links, Google, or a partner. Check where each one comes from first.

![A row of four plain brass push buttons mounted on a bare painted wall panel.](https://webleveling.com/blog/action-buttons-on-your-google-listing/action-buttons-featured.jpg)

A button sits under your business name that you never added, or the one you want, a booking or WhatsApp button, is nowhere in your settings. Meanwhile customers are tapping whatever is there, and you cannot say where it sends them. That worry is about control, and it has a clear answer.

Google Business Profile buttons come from four places: information you typed into your profile, a link you added yourself, an action Google generates, or a partner that Google lets supply a booking or ordering link. Once you know which place a button comes from, you know where to change it.

The ten-minute check on your phone comes first, because what customers see is the only version that counts. After it, each button has its own control, and a few old features are gone for good.

**Key Takeaways**

**Call, Website and Directions**

Call uses your verified phone number, Website uses your website URL, and Directions is generated by Google from your address or service area.

**Booking, ordering and menu links**

These come from a link you add or from an eligible partner, so the fix depends on which of the two put it there.

**WhatsApp and text**

You add one in Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat, and only one option shows if you add both. Both are limited to selected regions.

**Chat and quote requests ended**

Business Profile chat and call history were discontinued on July 31, 2024, and the former quote-request workflow is gone. The call button remains.

**Performance counts clicks**

Calls are clicks on the call button and bookings are completed bookings through a provider, so neither is a count of every sale or conversation.

## Find out where every button on your listing comes from

Google's help pages describe each button's source, and the source decides who can change it. A listing may not show every one of these, since availability varies by business category, country, region and profile eligibility.

Where each listing button comes from

| Button | Where it comes from | Where you change it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Call | Your verified phone number | Edit profile |
| Website | Your website URL | Edit profile |
| Directions | Generated by Google from your address or service area | Edit profile (address) |
| Text or WhatsApp | Added by you, where available | Edit profile, Contact, Chat |
| Booking or appointment | Your own appointment link, or an eligible booking provider | Booking, or Bookings |
| Order online | Your ordering link or a third-party ordering provider | Food ordering |
| Menu and services | Information you enter | Edit profile |

Google lays out these links in its [guide to managing local business links](https://support.google.com/business/answer/6218037) and its [overview of Google Business Profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7039811). A provider's link on your listing is an integration, a separate thing from a Google recommendation of that provider or a contract you signed with them.

Each button has one source, and the source tells you where to change it.

## Change a button from the one place that controls it

For phone, website and address, open your profile in Google Search or Maps and choose Edit profile. Update the field, save, and check the public listing afterward.

For WhatsApp or text, go to Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat, and pick WhatsApp or Text message. Enter a WhatsApp click-to-chat URL, or a phone number that can receive texts. If you add both, only one option shows to customers. Google says these options are available only in selected regions, so a missing option may be a region limit rather than a mistake. The steps are in Google's page on [chatting with customers from your profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/15013580), and our post on the [WhatsApp Business app for small business](https://webleveling.com/blog/whatsapp-business-app-for-small-business/) covers what happens after a customer messages you.

For a plain appointment link, choose Booking, add the URL and save. For a supported booking provider, choose Bookings, then Get started, and select the provider. Google's page on [setting up bookings through a provider](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7475773) says provider availability depends on country and eligibility, and that provider fees may apply. Your own Instagram and Facebook buttons are a separate system; the post on [adding a booking button to Instagram and Facebook](https://webleveling.com/blog/add-a-booking-button-to-instagram-and-facebook/) covers those.

For ordering, open Food ordering. There you can turn Accept orders on your profile on or off, add a custom link, set a preferred provider, or remove a provider. Google describes each option in its page on [managing online ordering options](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10842217).

![A small brass padlock and a single key resting on a folded cloth next to a stack of unmarked envelopes.](https://webleveling.com/blog/action-buttons-on-your-google-listing/gbp-buttons-padlock-key.jpg)

The person with access to the profile is the person who can change a button.

## Get an unwanted partner link removed

When a button leads to a provider you do not recognize, identify the provider first, because a link a provider supplies may need to be removed through that provider. Open the booking or ordering controls in your profile, note the provider's name, and use Google's removal request for that link.

Google says providers should remove certain ordering links within five business days, and act on specified booking-link requests within five days. If a link is still there after that, submit the request again and keep a record of the date you sent it.

Also check whether the link follows Google's rules. Google's [business links policy](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13769188) says a link must lead to a dedicated page for your business and let the customer complete the stated action, so an order link has to let someone place an order. Social media pages, messaging links, app-store links and link shorteners are not allowed, and Google may crawl links and remove any it cannot verify.

If you manage a profile with other people, confirm who holds ownership before you file anything. Google's page on [owners and managers](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3403100) explains the roles.

## Skip the features that no longer exist

Some buttons people look for were switched off. Google discontinued Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024, and history stayed available through Google Takeout until August 30, 2024. The former quote-request workflow tied to that chat is gone as well. Google's notice on [changes to chat and call history](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14919056) has the details.

The call button itself remains, so customers can still call straight from your profile. What disappeared is the call-history feature. The My Business Questions and Answers API was also discontinued, on November 3, 2025, according to Google's [Q&A API change log](https://developers.google.com/my-business/content/qanda/change-log) and its [deprecation schedule](https://developers.google.com/my-business/content/sunset-dates).

If you want a quote path today, that takes a link or a form on your own site rather than a Google button. Our post on the [Google request a quote button](https://webleveling.com/blog/google-request-a-quote-button/) covers the options that exist now.

Chat and quote requests belong to the past; the call button is still working.

## Check what customers see in ten minutes

Pick up your phone and search your exact business name on Google. Do it signed out or in a private window, then repeat in Google Maps. Write down every button, where each one leads, the phone number shown, and any provider name you do not know.

Open each link far enough to confirm it reaches the right business, location, service and contact. Test the call button by actually calling, and send yourself a WhatsApp or text if you added one. Then sign in to the profile and compare what you can edit with what you saw.

A button may not look identical in Search and Maps, on desktop and on a phone, or when you are signed in and out. What matters is that every visible one sends people to the right place and that a real person receives the request. Name one person on your team who answers calls, texts, bookings and orders, and write down the date you last tested each link.

The check takes about ten minutes and needs nothing but your phone and a notebook.

## Read the Performance report without overcounting

To see activity, sign in with the Google Account tied to the verified profile. In Search, open the profile and choose Performance. In the Google Maps app, open Business, then Performance, then See more. Google's page on [Business Profile performance](https://support.google.com/business/answer/9918094) says available metrics can include calls, website clicks, directions, messages, bookings and menu clicks.

Read each number for what it measures. Google defines Calls as clicks on the call button and Website clicks as clicks on the website link. Bookings are completed bookings through a booking provider, so a custom booking link is not reported as completed bookings in the same way.

None of these is a count of every sale or conversation. Compare the report with your own call log and booking records, and treat the gap between a tap and a customer as something you track yourself.

## Decide whether to fix it yourself or hire help

A wrong phone number, website, appointment link, menu link or custom ordering link can be checked and fixed in the profile alone. A monthly service is not needed to paste one link.

Paid help starts to pay off in a few situations: several locations that each need their own destination, a partner integration you did not authorize, broken booking or ordering software, unclear ownership, a suspended or unverified profile, or changes that do not publish correctly. In those cases the work spans the profile, the provider, your website and your staff.

## Frequently Asked Questions About Google Business Profile Buttons

**Where do Google Business Profile buttons come from?**

They come from information you enter, a link you add, an action Google generates, or an eligible third-party provider. Identify which one it is, then change it there.

**Why is there a booking button on my listing that I did not add?**

A provider can supply a booking or ordering link. Open the Booking or Food ordering controls, note the provider, and submit a removal request. Google says providers should act within five business days on certain ordering links and within five days on specified booking-link requests.

**How do I add WhatsApp or text to my listing?**

Choose Edit profile, then Contact, then Chat, and pick WhatsApp or Text message. Enter a click-to-chat URL or a number that can receive texts. Only one option shows if you add both, and both are limited to selected regions.

**Can I still use Google Business Profile chat?**

No. Google discontinued Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024, and the former quote-request workflow is gone. The call button remains.

**Can I use my own booking link?**

Yes. Choose Booking, add the URL and save. The link has to lead to a dedicated page for your business where the customer can complete the booking, and it cannot be a social media, messaging or app-store link or a link shortener.

**How do I see what my customers see?**

Search your business name on your phone while signed out, and repeat the check in Google Maps. Record each button and test where it leads.

## Final Thoughts

Every button on your listing has one source: your profile information, a link you added, Google itself, or an eligible partner. Edit profile handles phone, website and address, Contact and Chat handle WhatsApp or text, Booking and Bookings handle appointments, and Food ordering handles orders. Chat, call history and quote requests are gone, and the Performance report counts clicks and completed provider bookings, not every sale.

A profile where every button reaches the right place, and someone answers each one, loses fewer calls and fewer bookings. A short test every few months keeps it that way.

If a partner link will not go away, you run several locations, or your booking software keeps breaking, [Web Leveling](https://webleveling.com/) can sort it out through our [Google Business Profile management](https://webleveling.com/services/google-business-profile-management/) service. We work with small and medium businesses across the country and overseas. [Contact us about your Google listing buttons](https://webleveling.com/contact/), and we will tell you whether a fix is something you can do yourself in ten minutes.
